If you see a CD stuck on the front of a magazine, the chances are that Robatech made the machinery that put it there. This company designs and engineers glue sealing machinery for a wide range of uses and needed to review their well established IT system. Check-Tek provided an audit of the IT system and helped Robatech move forward in the most productive way, enabling them to achieve their business goals without getting stuck on costs.
Staff changes meant that Robatech did not have a detailed knowledge of how their IT system worked and what needed to be changed. They knew that there were some weaknesses and that some of the hardware was old and might need replacing, but needed some practical advice from experts.
The main difficulty
The existing system had been developed by someone who was ‘self-taught’. This meant that a review of the system to remove weaknesses was essential before Robatech could develop it.
Check-Tek approached the problem by talking to as many users as possible at Robatech to establish how they used the system and what the perceived weaknesses were. Check-Tek then discussed the system in more detail with a key member of staff who had developed an excellent knowledge through working with the system.
A complete audit
The next step was to conduct a complete audit of all the hardware and software within the system, together with a review of the security on the server. The audit revealed that the security in some areas was very loose and data was open to all, whereas in other areas it was so tight that it had become unusable, so data had to be copied in different places to allow people to share and access information.
As part of the review, Check-Tek looked carefully at the whole business and at their technology needs.
Spread the costs
Once the audit was complete, Check-Tek supplied Robatech with a costed report which explained where they were, recommendations on where they should be moving to and the cost implications. Check-Tek identified areas of priority which helped Robatech to budget the development of the system and spread the costs.
Check-Tek installed a new server, added workstations and upgraded software and their database. The server is now secure and the various areas of data are only available to certain users. Robatech now have an ongoing development programme and are much more confident and self-sufficient, being able to look after the system on a day-to-day basis and getting extra help from Check-Tek as and when required.
