System Development For Ammann

Making roads is big business for Ammann UK Limited who install enormous Asphalt machines which produce material used to create our highways. The company is a UK subsidiary of a Swiss company and had many uses for computers but no time or skills to develop their own system. Check-Tek was asked to update their old system and soon provided a solution to ensure minimum maintenance and maximum number of features.

The issues

Ammann’s old IT system did not work with any other areas of the business. The Managing Director’s computer had e-mail and he was able to produce documents but the administration staff could not share these documents. The accounts were also run on one computer that was not accessible from the MD's desk. Ammann dealt with many countries in Europe and had lots of documents that were transferred by e-mail. They also had some specific accounts software that ran on an old computer and they were unclear whether they could run the accounts software on a new system.

A new system

Check-Tek discussed various options with them and established that the solution would need to include a central server to allow the sharing of information, plus internal and external e-mail. Check-Tek recommended Microsoft Back Office Small Business Server which is ideal for companies of this size. It is a combined package which gives a server based operating system with e-mail, diary, contacts, shared and logged web access and many other useful features.

Fraction of the cost

If the individual components were purchased separately they would be too expensive for smaller businesses but as ‘Small Business Server’, Ammann could get all the benefits at a fraction of the cost. Check-Tek included a secure system with back-up, anti-virus and power protection in the solution and then set up the new system and trained the staff to ensure everything would run smoothly.

Extensive knowledge

Check-Tek’s extensive knowledge of the Accounts Software market meant that they could ensure the old accounts system worked on the new technology so disruption was kept to a minimum. Ammann now have a stable system that runs in the background and requires minimal maintenance. All staff are able to run their individual applications but also share the information and e-mail from each desk, giving greater access to the information superhighway whilst their business stays on the road to success.
